Today, I would like to introduce the advantages and disadvantages of Machiya.

今日は町家のええトコと、弱点についてご紹介致します。

 

I, myself, live in Machiya.

実は、私自身が町家に住んでおります。

Machiya is such a wonderful place to live.

町家、ほんまにええですよ（＾＾）私は大好きです。

町家の弱点(Machiya’s disadvantages)

 

There are many advantages to Machiya,

but more than anything else,

the best merit is its relaxing atmosphere.

You can feel the warmth of the tree and nature in Machiya,

which will give you a time of  relief.

町家のええとこはいっぱいありますが、

何と言っても　「落ち着きます」

木のぬくもりや、自然を感じる事ができるので

ほっとできますね。

 

By the way, the place where I live is a Machiya for commoner

and the restroom is place outside in the backyard.

Everyone who visits my place all say, “It feels like visiting grandparent’s house”.

ちなみに、私の住んでいるところはほんまに

庶民の町家で、しかもトイレが外（庭）にあります（笑）

遊びにきた方には「おばあちゃん家にきたみたい」と

よく言われます。

 

The bathroom, restroom, and kitchen of Guest house Connection are all repaired and clean.

ゲストハウス　コネクションの町家は、トイレ・バス、キッチンは

新しく綺麗ですのでご安心くださいませ。

 

I have also stated in the article before,

Machiya’s soundproof performance is very low and cold wind peaks into the house

because there are several openings in walls.

Machiya is well ventilated so you can hear sounds of neighbors,

which can be both advantage and disadvantage…

あと、これは弱点のところにも書きましたが

あちこちに隙間があるので、防音性が低い＆隙間風が入って寒い。

良くも悪くも、風通しがいいので、外の音がよく聞こえます。

 

You can hear the neighbors chatting and laughing voices of the children.

It might be surprising at first, but once you get used to it,

the neighbors will become like a family and you will feel closer to them.

The row houses in the past might have been like this…

ご近所さんの立ち話の声や、子供さんの笑い声なんかも

聞こえます。最初はびっくりしますが、慣れたらなんといいますが

ご近所さんが親戚みたいに、とっても親近感がわいてきます。

昔の長屋って、こういう感じだったのかなあ～と。

 

The texture of the wood,

Tilted part of flooring and tatami flooring.

Voices and sounds from the neighbors.

木の質感や、床や畳がちょっと斜めになっている箇所や

ご近所から聞こえてくる音を感じていると

 

All these features of Machiya can make you feel

as if you are expriencing the flow of the time.

家が体験してきた時代の流れの断片を

自分自身も共有しているような感覚になります。

 

Machiya is a special place where you can feel warmth of the past.

「懐かしさ」　「古き良き時代への憧れ」を

感じることのできる特別な空間。

町家には、そんな不思議な力があるんじゃないでしょうか？

 

The difference from hotel is that you can borrow the entire house all to yourself.

ホテルさん、旅館さんとの大きな違いは

「１棟まるまる貸切り」で利用できるという事。

 

Except the check-in time, the house is open just for you and your companion.

Please think of the guest house like your vacation house.

チェックインの案内時以外は、お客様だけの

プライベート空間です。

ご自身の別荘感覚でご滞在いただけます。

 

Every guest house has a kitchen.

You can go shopping at Nishiki Market or department store

and buy delicious meat and Kyoto vegetables,

and have a nice dinner at the guest house.

キッチンがあるので、例えば錦市場や

デパートの高島屋や大丸さんのデパ地下で

三嶋亭のお肉と京野菜を購入して

家で焼く、なんてこともできちゃいます。

 

Guest house is especially favored by families and those who have children.

There are refrigerator, microwave oven, cooking utensils, and seasonings

all ready for you in the guest house.

特に、ご家族・お子様連れのお客様には

ご好評を頂いております。

キッチンには、勿論冷蔵庫、電子レンジが。

フライパン、鍋、お皿一式に塩、醤油など

ちょっとした調味料をご用意しています。

 

Also, we have tea, Japanese green tea, and a little bit welcome snacks

ready for you at the guest house.

また、緑茶、紅茶などのお茶セットと

ちょっとしたウェルカムおつまみ？も

ご用意してお待ちしております。

 

At Guest house Connection,

Karasuma-gojo, Kawaramachi-gojo, and Kiyomizu has washing machine equipted.

ゲストハウスコネクションでは

町家の烏丸五条、河原町五条と

洋館の清水に洗濯機も完備しています。

 

Chionin is the only guest house where the washing machine is not equipted,

but not to worry, there is a 24 hour coin operated laundry nearby.

町家の知恩院のみ、設置場所の都合で洗濯機はございませんが

すぐ近くに２４時間営業の有料コインランドリーがありますので

長期のご滞在にも、便利です。

 

We especially recommend the stay at our guest house

to those who are interested in the life of Kyoto.

町家、路地奥、一棟貸し、プライベート空間、そして

「お客様」としてだけでなく、

「京都での日常生活」「普通の京都暮らし」に

興味がおありの方には、ぜひおすすめです。

 

To tell you the truth, there is nothing special about the Machiya of Guest house Connection.

But, you can experience “daily life” and “non-daily life”,

“history” and “present day” at the same time.

正直申し上げて、ゲストハウス　コネクションの

町家には、「わ～すごい」と言うような

華美な調度品はございません。

でも

「非日常」と「日常」、そして

「歴史」と「モダン」の両方を

味わえる、素敵な場所だと思っております。

 

It would be such a wonder opportunity for people to

know the brilliance of Machiya and pleasure of Kyoto’s daily life.

Today, I would like to introduce Machiya’s advantages and disadvantages.

今日は町家のええトコと、弱点についてご紹介致します。

 

I, myself, also live in Machiya.

実は、私自身が町家に住んでおります。

Machiya is such a spectacular place. I love Machiya.

町家、ほんまにええですよ（＾＾）私は大好きです。

 

First of all, I would like to talk honestly about Machiya’s disadvantages.

まずは、正直に、町家の弱点からお伝えしますね。

 

 

①

Machiya’s soundproof performance is very low and cold wind peaks into the house because there are several openings in walls.

あちこちに隙間があるので、防音性が低い＆

隙間風が入って寒い。

 

Machiya is well ventilated so you can hear sounds of neighbors, which can be both advantage and disadvantage…

良くも悪くも、風通しがいいので、外の音がよく聞こえます。

In other terms, the sounds you make in Machiya can be heard from the outside.

つまり、家の中の音も、外に聞こえやすいという事です。

Please keep your voices down from nighttime to early morning.

夜間～早朝に、大きな声や音をお控え頂くのはこの為です。

 

Machiya is very cool during summer, but can be very chilly during winter.

特に１階は夏は涼しくていいのですが、冬は冷えます（＾＾；）

Long time ago, there were no heating system and the only way to keep Machiya warm was by charcoal brazier.

昔は、今のように暖房器具がなく、火鉢が唯一の暖をとる

That is amazing.

方法だったそうで、すごいですネ。

It might become a great opportunity to feel gratefulness to present-day life.

現代社会のありがたさを実感できる、貴重な機会になるかもしれません。

 

②

Some Machiya might have a very old water system, such as bathroom and kitchen.

物件により、お風呂やトイレ、キッチンなどの水回りが古い。

On that point you can feel relieved since Guest house Connection is different.

しか～し、ゲストハウス　コネクションの家は、この点は心配ご不要です。

Water systems are all repaired and everything is cleaner than clean!!

綺麗に改修してありますので、トイレ、バス、キッチン全て新しく綺麗です！！

 

③　階段の昇り降りに注意

Machiya in Karasuma-gojo and Chionin does not have stairway handrail.

烏丸五条と知恩院の町家の階段は手すりがございませんので

Please be cautious as you climb the stairs.

昇り降りの際にはご注意下さいませ。

 

④

This can also be an advantage, but the houses of Guest house Connection is all non-smoking area.

これは利点でもあるのですが、ゲストハウスコネクションの家は

全て完全禁煙でご利用頂いております。

Most existing Machiya are build in back alley so once the house gets caught on fire, there’s no turning back.

たいていの京町家は路地奥にある事も多く、木造の家はいったん火災になると、

取り返しがつきません。

The neighboring houses are mostly wooden built so fire can be very scary.

ご近所も皆さん木造のお家が多いので、本当に火事は怖いです。

 

At my house, cooking is done with gass and we put fire in charcoal brazier.

The main heating system is air conditioner and electric stove, but nothing else.

We are too cautious to use oil stove.

私の家も、キッチンはガス、あと火鉢に火は入れますが

暖房器具はエアコンが一台と、小さな電気ストーブのみで

ガスのヒーターや、石油ストーブは怖くて使えません。

 

The above four points are the disadvantages of Machiya.

町家の弱点？としてはこんなところでしょうか？
